  • In an ever-advancing world of technological innovation, there is an increase in demand for visionaries and creators. Therefore, it is paramount that our high-quality computing curriculum equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world in which they live.

  • The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. By building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. At Chesterfield, our intent is that computing ensures pupils become digitally literate – able to use, express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

  • Inline with our curriculum driver, developing aspirations and possibilities for all, we believe that computing underpins a successful future for our children at Chesterfield School. We want children to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be computer programmers, engineers and technicians. Our curriculum drivers of oracy, emotional intelligence and aspirations for all shape every aspect of computing, are embedded in teaching and learning and develop the child as a whole. 



  • At Chesterfield we use the published scheme 'Kapow Primary'. In this scheme children will learn how computers and computer systems work; they will design and build programs, develop their ideas using technology and create a range of content.
  • Computing is taught through a cycle of lessons which allows the children to explore before being taught the skills needed to advance their understanding. 
  • Beyond the computing curriculum and as part of the Chesterfield Learning Quest, digital technology supports other curriculum subjects by providing access to a wide range of source material, developing enquiry skills, promoting collaboration between pupils and enabling the presentation of information in increasingly diverse ways. 
  • Internet Safety is embedded throughout the curriculum. It is taught in conjunction with PSHE through a ‘Digital Me’ unit of work.  Online Safety is continuously referenced across the curriculum within lessons where appropriate and is also addressed during regular assemblies, alongside the school’s core values. Pupils are encouraged to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.  


By the end of their primary education our children will:

  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, by recognising acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, and identifying a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.
  • Create simple programs leading to the designing and writing of more sophisticated sequences.
  • Detect errors and debug programs and solve problems by deconstructing them into smaller parts.
  • Develop their reasoning skills to enable them to predict the behaviour of systems and explain how they work. 
  • Use technology purposefully to create, collect, organise, store, analyse, manipulate and present digital content by combining a variety of software on a range of digital devices.
  • Understand how to use computer networks to communicate and collaborate, while analysing the reliability sources when using search technologies.
